Who We Are

The Grace Covenant family exists to help people find real joy in Christ and his gospel. We love that God has placed us in a growing and vibrant neighborhood, the Fan District, to be a community of hope and good news for our neighbors. Our vision for our life together is encapsulated well in our Affirmation of Mission:

Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church exists for this purpose:
to love God with all our heart, soul, mind and strength,
to share the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ,
to enjoy the communion of the Holy Spirit,
and to love our neighbor as ourselves.
Therefore, we covenant with God and each other:
to worship God faithfully and joyfully,
to learn and live by the Word of God,
to tell the good news of Jesus Christ in all the world,
to nurture and enlarge the fellowship of the church,
and to serve human need with sympathy and compassion.

God is at work among us! He is growing us to be a more prayerful, mission-minded, gospel-centered people. We sincerely hope that you become a part of what God is accomplishing among us as the people of Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church.

On this page you will find information about our pastors, staff, and elected leadership. You will also see a link to the right that takes you to a short explanation of the rich history of our church family.

This is, of course, just a snapshot of who we are, and only so much can be learned through words. The very best way to get a sense of who we are is to come visit and experience our faith community firsthand, and to see the new things that God is doing in and through us.

Leadership in the Presbyterian Church

Leadership in the Presbyterian Church is housed neither solely in an individual nor in the congregation as a whole but is instead representative in nature. The session and the board of deacons constitute the main leadership bodies in the Presbyterian Church and together are responsible for leading the congregation in its faith, life, worship, and mission.

The session is the main governing body of the church and consists of elected leaders called elders. There are two kinds of elders that serve together on the session: teaching elders (ministers responsible for preaching the gospel) and ruling elders (guiding church members who are not ministers). They together are responsible for the faith, life, mission, and government of the church. Among other responsibilities, the session prays with and for the members and ministers of the church, receives new members, approves the administration of baptism and of the Lord’s Supper, provides for all our worship services, sets the budget, and oversees our educational programs, mission work, and outreach.

The word deacon comes from the Bible and means servant. Throughout its history the Christian Church has recognized some of its members as especially gifted to serve others and has appointed people to serve as deacons. Here at Grace Covenant deacons are elected and organized into a board of deacons. Together they are responsible for leading the congregation in ministries of sympathy and compassion. Our deacons offer congregational care and assistance during times of special need, pray for our members and friends, usher for all worship services, receive the offerings and gifts of the people during worship, care for our college and graduate school students, visit and take flowers to our hospitalized or at-home members, assist with funerals, administer the Deacons’ Fund, and more.

We are also led by a dedicated staff that works hard to ensure that our congregation continues to grow in the faith and serve others in love.

Please contact our church office to speak with a pastor, elder, or deacon.

PASTORS AND STAFF

Steve Cobb Photo

Steve Cobb, Pastor

Before coming to Grace Covenant, Steve served for five years as Pastor/Head of Staff of the Presbyterian Church of Morris Plains, New Jersey. Prior to his call to Morris Plains, Steve was the Associate Pastor of Carmel Presbyterian in Charlotte, North Carolina and Assistant to the Pastor at Hebron Presbyterian in Manakin-Sabot, Virginia.

Steve is blessed to be married to Emily Hope Cobb. They recently celebrated their tenth anniversary, and have two precious and energetic sons, Hollis, age nine, and Camden, age six.

Steve rejoices in God's grace, which he has experienced in profound ways. He is always excited about the prospect of sharing the joy Christ brings to our lives in abundance.

He enjoys leading studies of God's Word, knows his call is to preach directly from Scripture, and is committed to building strong fellowship with the people of Grace Covenant and the surrounding community.

Steve has been involved in mission trips to Santa Barbara del Tuy, Venezuela, Neon, Kentucky, Afula, Israel, Rocky Mount, North Carolina, Starks, Maine, and most recently, three trips to San Cristobal, Dominican Republic.

Steve is drawn to urban ministry out of the belief that God, as Acts so wonderfully demonstrates, has special plans to use the city as a means to introduce the 21st century world to the beauty of Jesus Christ. He especially holds a place in his heart for the City of Richmond. As a student at Union, both of his graduation ceremonies were held in the sanctuary of Grace Covenant.

A firm believer in God's providential care for our lives, Steve stands firmly convicted that it is surely that providence which has brought his ministry and the ministry of this body of Christ together.
